This month’s Member Spotlight features Dr. Mary Catherine Brake Turner. Mary Catherine is Clinical Assistant Professor and has been Program Director for the Med-Peds Residency at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University for the past 8 months.
“Currently I am most excited about the Transition Medicine curriculum we are incorporating in the residency training. Most notably is that our nurse care coordinator position was recently fully funded by the Brody School of Medicine, no longer relying on grant funding for this work. The residents are assigned transition patients in their continuity clinic panel and see them with assistance of the nurse care coordinator, we hold a bi-monthly transition journal club as part of our Monday conference series, and residents participate in Transition Medicine during their ambulatory Med-Peds rotation which includes patients in clinic with me, home visits, transition clinics in subspecialty areas, and completing case scenarios complements of Dr. Kitty O’Hare of Boston Children’s Hospital. I owe my inspiration for pursuing Transition Medicine to Dr. Cynthia Peacock.
My favorite part of the PD role has been advocating for the residents in helping them secure leadership opportunities and make connections as they are looking into fellowship programs. Most recently I nominated one of our rising chief residents for the MagMutual scholarship to attend the Telluride Patient Safety Camp and she will be attending this summer with all expenses paid. Another current resident was promoted to receive funding to attend a North Carolina Medical Society Leadership Program this summer with expenses paid.
I really enjoyed recruitment season and am eagerly awaiting Match Day – probably as excited and nervous as I was for my own Match Day 9 years ago. Our Med-Peds Interest Group is a very active group and we continue to recruit great talent in the Brody School of Medicine to pursue Med-Peds. Be on the lookout for future applicants from Brody!
On my weekends off, my husband Carl and I, with our yellow lab Bella, enjoy taking our boat, “Solunar”, over to Cape Lookout or Shackelford Banks to spend the day. Carl and I enjoy traveling together – whether abroad, across the US or continuing to explore NC. We also enjoy entertaining at our home and look forward to another fun-filled residency graduation cookout this June!”
